Serving The Community

  • Al Cunningham, a lifelong resident of Western Kentucky, was born and raised in Trigg County.   He eventually moved to Lyon County and resided there for a few years before settling in Marshall County, his home for the past 35 years.   Al and his wife of 34 years, Penny Cunningham, are the proud parents to three children and three grandchildren.  Al attends Zions Cause Baptist Church, and faith is the cornerstone in Al’s life.
  • From a young age, Al demonstrated a strong work ethic.  As a teenager, he worked with local farmers, mowed lawns, and had a newspaper route.   Then as a young adult, Al worked in the towboat industry as a deck hand.  Al also worked on the construction of I-24, the interstate that ties the communities of Marshall and Lyon Counties together. After the completion of I-24, Al seized the opportunity to join Painters Local 500 in Paducah, KY.
  • Al was passionate about the Union, always looking for ways to get more involved.  Al’s first election was to the position of Warden, and then President.  By 2002, he won the election to serve as Business Representative for the Painters and Allied Trades for District Council 91.  As Business Representative, he oversaw the locals in Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky.  Al was dedicated to improving work force productivity, safety, and training.  Al held the roles of the Council’s Director of Servicing and the Labor Management Cooperation Initiative Director, where he served over 400 employers across Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee.  During this time, Al served as trustee to multiple Health and Welfare Funds, making sure workers had health insurance coverage for their families. Through his involvement with the PATCH Fund, Al helped coordinate numerous charitable events for children over the years.
  • Al continues to help working families across the state of Kentucky.  He is an active member of Local 500, and he still serves as Trustee to the Kentucky State Building and Construction Trade Council Executive Board.   Al sits on the Kentucky Housing Corporation Executive Board in Frankfort, an appointment by former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.   He also holds a seat on the board for the Jackson House Apartments and W.B. Sanders retirement centers in Paducah.
  • Throughout his life, Al has exemplified hard work and service to others.   His devotion to improving the lives of workers and employers has earned the respect and confidence of both labor and management.  He has proven that he can bring opposing sides together to find agreeable solutions to sensitive issues.  It is time to elect the right candidate with the most knowledge and experience to handle the tough issues in Frankfort.
  • Al has a vision for Kentucky where ALL can prosper and feel proud to call Kentucky home, where people can raise families and eventually retire with dignity and pride.  As State Representative for House District 6, Al’s Western Kentucky values, work ethic, and passion will enable him to fight for common sense resolutions for working families across House District 6 and all across Kentucky.
